Minnesota’s Secretary of State Mark Ritchie visited the
Anoka County Government Center on September 14 to learn more about
how Anoka County is leading the way in providing information about
services and opportunities to residents via the county Web site,
www.anokacounty.us.
“Today was the beginning of a conversation about the long
term, and had some very immediate action items that we could
incorporate in our relationship and the things that we do,” said
Ritchie of the experience.
According to Anoka County webmaster Paul Burtness, the
Secretary wanted to learn how counties, including Anoka, could
combine operations with the Secretary of State’s Office, and get rid
of duplication.
“There are many functions that the Secretary of State’s
Office handles,” said Burtness, “especially in the area of elections
where we still are doing quite a bit of work, but it would make
sense for the Secretary of State’s Office to handle that and make
things more efficient.”

Anoka County Board Chairman Dennis Berg said Ritchie’s
visit demonstrates that Anoka County employees are creative,
innovative, and worthy of statewide notice. “Our programs, our
policies, and our Web site election night results are something that
they would like to see repeated across the state and other counties.
They’re coming to us to get some insight as to how we accomplished
this, so it’s exciting because it’s very positive for the job we’re
doing,” said Berg.
