Dennis Berg Elected Anoka County Board Chair

Anoka County Commissioner Dennis Berg was elected chair of the seven-member county board at its organizational meeting January 8, 2008. Commissioner Jim Kordiak was elected vice chair.

“The county board will place an increased emphasis on economic development in 2008,” Berg said. “Anoka County has 11 percent of the labor force in the Twin Cities metropolitan area but just 7 percent of the area’s jobs. We need to do a better job of closing that gap.”

Economic development projects already underway in Anoka County include the Northstar Commuter Rail line, set to begin operations in 2009; expansion of the Anoka County-Blaine Airport to accommodate corporate jets; the Running Aces Harness Park in Columbus, scheduled for an April 2008 opening; and the proposed SportsTown USA development in Blaine. “These projects will not only create jobs but will strengthen the county’s commercial-industrial tax base which, in turn, helps keep taxes down for residents living in Anoka County.”

Berg has served on the county board since 1991, taking a leadership role on transportation issues. In addition to serving as board chair, Berg chairs the Public Works and Internal Audit Committees and is a member of the Finance and Capital Improvement, Law Library Board of Trustees, Management, Benefits and Compensation, Fairgrounds Advisory, Web Oversight, and Wetlands Review Committees. He also serves on the Anoka County Regional Railroad Authority, Minnesota Inter-County Association and the Metropolitan Council Transportation Advisory Board. He is a member of the Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC) board of directors, AMC District 10 Executive Committee, and AMC Legislation Steering Committee.

Berg represents District 1 on the western side of the county which includes Burns Township, Bethel, Ramsey, St. Francis, and portions of Andover, Anoka, and Oak Grove.
