April Programs Offered by Anoka County Parks and Recreation
April
is a great time to get out and enjoy the weather as we transition
from winter to spring! Walk the trails, bird watch, or take the time
to try a new nature program offered by the Anoka County Parks and
Recreation Department. For more information on classes, please

Nature Across the Continent: Minnesota to Alaska
Sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the awesome scenery and
animals of Alaska as you learn how the animals of Minnesota and
Alaska are linked. Whether it is flyways, adaptations, related
species, or human impact, what happens here reflects in nature
thousands of miles away. This program is geared for ages 12-90.
Pre-registration is required by calling 651-429-8007. Thursday,
April 3, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon
Rapids. Fee: $3/person.
April Bird Migrants
As the weather warms up, more and more migrant birds flock to
Anoka County. We will explore an area lake or two and then proceed
to the Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley. Meet at the Wargo
Nature Center in Lino Lakes to car pool. Pre-registration is
required by calling 651-429-8007. Saturday, April 5, 8:00-10:30 a.m.
at Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes. Fee: $3/person.
Beautiful Birthdays! (Super Sprouts Club)
Spring is the time when new little ones are making their entrance
into the world. We’ll check out who’s hatching and what’s blooming.
You’ll even get to take home your very own seed to grow. Geared for
young explorers ages 6-7. Pre-registration is required by calling
651-429-8007. Saturday, April 12, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Wargo
Nature Center in Lino Lakes. Fee: $3/person.
Migration Return! (Young Naturalist Club)
The geese and ducks will return this month. We will explore the
lake and look for signs of spring. Please dress for the weather (and
be prepared to get dirty)! Pre-registration is required by calling
651-429-8007. For children ages 8-11 years old. Saturday, April 12,
10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes. Fee:
$3/child.
Spring Has Sprung (Nymphs and Nuthatches)
It’s time to look for signs of spring! Let’s look for the new
plants and animals that will be out and about. This program is
geared for preschool children ages 4-5. Pre-registration is required
by calling 651-429-8007. Wednesday, April 16, 9:30-11:00 a.m. at
Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon Rapids or Wednesday, April 16,
1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes. Fee:
$3/child.
Bird Walk
Join us as an experienced birder leads us through several Anoka
County parks. Enjoy seeing and hearing 20-50 different species of
birds. A checklist of Minnesota birds and a map of each area will be
provided. People of all ages and birding abilities are welcome. For

700-9:00 a.m. or Saturday, April 26, 7:00-9:00 a.m. at Coon Rapids
Dam Regional Park in Coon Rapids. Fee: $3/person.
Finding Spring Migrant Ducks
The Carlos Avery Wildlife Area is a great place to find a variety
of migratory waterfowl. You may even see bald eagles and Sandhill
cranes! Pre-registration is required by calling 651-429-8007.
Saturday, April 19, 8:00-11:00 a.m. at the Wargo Nature Center in
Lino Lakes. Fee: $3/person.
Earth Day Celebration
Join us at the Wargo Nature Center for a FREE fun-filled family
Earth Day event complete with entertainment, petting zoo, climbing
wall, canoeing, and light refreshments. Make your own earth art
project to take home and visit the Earth Day Fair where local
organizations and businesses will provide information and activities
about earth-friendly practices and products. This event is sponsored
by area businesses, Anoka County Parks and Recreation, and the City
of Lino Lakes. Saturday, April 19, 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Wargo
Nature Center in Lino Lakes.
Fly-Fishing Clinic for Women
This beginner’s course provides basic information about fly
fishing including equipment choices, basic fishing knots, and
hands-on instruction on fly casting techniques. Once we’ve got those
down, we will head out to fish. This event is sponsored by the
Minnesota “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” program, the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources MinnAqua Fishing program, and the
Anoka County Parks and Recreation Department. All equipment is
provided. The class is limited to 12 participants. Pre-registration
and payment is required through the DNR by calling 651-296-6157.
Tuesday, April 22, 5:30-8:30 p.m. and Thursday, April 24, 5:30-8:30
p.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon Rapids. Fee:
$30/person for both sessions.
Kayak the Mississippi
Kayak from Mississippi West Regional Park in Ramsey to Coon
Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon Rapids. This is a beautiful stretch
of river and a wonderful area to kayak. Leave your car at Coon
Rapids Dam Regional Park and we will shuttle you to the launch site.
A naturalist will be along to point out wildlife along the river.
Bring a lunch/snack. Program fee includes kayak, paddle, and life
vest. Or bring your own kayak and pay just $10/person.

April 26, 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in
Coon Rapids. Fee: $15/person.
Introduction to Kayaking
Sea kayaking is a fun and easy way to enjoy Minnesota’s lakes and
rivers. We will cover the basics of kayaking and explore the Rice
Creek Chain of Lakes in Lino Lakes. No experience is necessary.
Space is limited. Pre-registration is required by calling
651-429-8007. Monday, April 28, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Wargo Nature
Center in Lino Lakes. Fee: $15/person.
Birds and Blooms
Late April provides a double opportunity for nature lovers. Many
spring migrant birds have returned and the first early spring
flowers are in bloom. We will take a leisurely walk looking for
birds and blooms. The site will be selected a few days prior to the
event once our naturalist guide decides which area will best serve
our needs. Pre-registration is required by calling 651-429-8007.
Tuesday, April 29, 8:00-10:00 a.m. at Wargo Nature Center. Fee:
$3/person.
Cutline
Get up close and personal with a llama (and a host of other
animals) at the annual Wargo Nature Center Earth Day event Saturday,
April 19.
