Parents who are concerned about whether their child’s development
is on schedule may sign up to receive free early intervention
services. Services are provided for children from birth to age three
who are living in Anoka County.
Because many basic language and motor skills are developed at a
young age, some children may need extra help in order to be ready
for kindergarten. Early intervention may be helpful if a child:
• Has hearing or vision concerns.
• Is slow learning to talk.
• Has trouble with coordination, walking, or crawling.
• Has difficulty calming down when upset.
• Has difficulty playing with toys.
• Has behavior concerns or difficulty playing with other
children.
• Has a medical condition or syndrome that can affect
development.
• Was born prematurely or with a low birth weight.
As part of the early intervention services, children may be
observed in their own home or other comfortable setting by child
development staff. Parents have the opportunity to discuss their
child’s development and are given ideas on how to help their child
learn new skills. Parents also may be given referrals to other
services that may help their child and family.
