Fire Inspection Guidelines
- Smoke detectors on every level - even though that level is not
being used for child care. In newer homes a smoke detector in each
bedroom.
- Electric outlet covers on plug-ins.
- Bedroom/bathroom door locks shall be open-able from outside.
Opening device shall be readily accessible.
- A ‘2A10BC’ or larger fire extinguisher. If you have a fire
extinguisher, does it need to be serviced? (If more than one year
old, it will need to be serviced.)
- There must be two means of escape from each room of the
residence used by children. One means of escape must be a stairway
or door leading to the floor of exit discharge. The other must be
a door or window leading directly outside. Windows must be
open-able without special knowledge or special tools.
- If basement area is to be used, the area may need to be
finished.
- Usable storage space under stairs, walls and soffits of space,
needs to be protected by one-hour fire resistive construction.
- Furnace, water heater, wood stove must be inaccessible to
children.
- Extension cords shall not be used as a substitute for
permanent wiring; extension cords and flexible cords shall not be
affixed to structures, extended through walls, ceilings, floors,
under doors or floor coverings, nor be subject to environmental
damage or physical impact.
- Child care residence with an attached garage must have a self
closing, tight fitting solid wood bonded core door at least 1 3/8
inch thick, or door with a fire protection rating of 20 minutes or
greater and a separation wall consisting of 5/8 inch thick gypsum
wallboard or its equivalent on the garage side between the
residence and garage.
- Combustible items, i.e., wood, paper, clothes, paints etc.
must not be located within 36 inches of the furnace or other
heating sources.
- Whenever in use, fireplaces, wood burning stoves, space
heaters, steam radiators, and other potentially hot surfaces, such
as steam pipes, must be protected by guards to prevent burns.
- Stairways of three or more steps must have handrails.
Stairways must be well lighted, in good repair and free of clutter
and obstruction.
- A closet door latch must be made so that children can open the
door from inside the closet.
- Double cylinder (key required both sides) locks on exit doors
are prohibited.
- Address visible on exterior of a house.
- One operational flashlight provided for child care use.
- LPG gas stored outside.
- Wood paneling in older homes must be fire rated as Class A, B
or C. If it is not, it must be removed or covered with a UL listed
product.
This is not an all inclusive list. These are guidelines only
compiled from the Minnesota Day Care Rule and the fire inspectors.
