Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of disease
and death in the U.S. Additionally, Anoka County residents have
identified smoking for youth and adults as a major community health
problem (Community Health Services (CHS) Plan, 2004). Adults and
families at risk for illness and premature death related to smoking
with a focus on tobacco use among underage youth continues to remain a
priority (Anoka County CHS, 2005-2009).
The key strategies to accomplishing a reduction in youth tobacco use is through partnering with community leadership organizations, including: expanding youth leadership in the planning, advocacy, and implementation of tobacco-free policies; expanding community awareness of the dangers of second-hand smoke; increasing the number of tobacco-free homes and vehicles; providing consultation to local media advocacy campaigns; and increasing the number of active, community partners engaged in locally-driven advocacy efforts.
For more information, see the following items on this page. Many of these items list downloadable brochures and flyers.
