PRECINCT CAUCUS: Presidential Campaigns: The DFL Party and Republican Party have set February 5, 2008 as the date of their precinct caucuses.  The Independence Party has also set February 5, 2008 as the start date in their caucus process.  (The political parties control the proceedings at the caucus.)  Information about caucus sites will be available on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Web site at  www.sos.state.mn.us.

Secretary of State: Legislative Session Begins

Presidents' Day Holiday: No public business shall be transacted, except in cases of necessity. 

Legislature: Last day for 2008 Legislature to meet in regular session - first Monday following the 3rd Saturday in May of any year.

Filing period for federal, state, county, city and school district offices to be elected at state general election - not more than 70 days nor less than 56 days before the state primary. Affects Cities of Anoka, Blaine, Columbia Heights, Coon Rapids, Fridley and Ramsey as well as School Districts 12, 13 and 728 as well as Soil and Water Districts 1, 2 and 5.

Independence Day Holiday:  No public business shall be transacted, except in cases of necessity.

Last day for candidates to withdraw.  Candidates may withdraw until 5:00 p.m. by filing an Affidavit of Withdrawal - within 2 days after filing closes. 

Absentee voting for primary election for State Primary - during the 30 days before the election.  Also open on Saturday from 10a.m. to 3 p.m. and the day before the election until 5:00 p.m.

Voter pre-registration closes at 5:00 p.m. for State Primary - 21 days before the primary. 

Cities without a Primary: Candidate filing period - opens 70 days before election and closes 56 days before election.  Affects Cities of Andover, Bethel, Centerville, Columbus, East Bethel, Ham Lake, Hilltop, Lexington, Oak Grove, Spring Lake Park and St Francis.  Hospital District Offices for at Large, and Spring Lake Park also file at this time.

Labor Day Holiday:  No public business shall be transacted, except in cases of necessity. 

County Auditor's office open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for acceptance of absentee ballot applications and casting of absentee ballots - on the Saturday immediately preceding the election.

County Auditor's office open until 5:00 p.m. on the day immediately preceding the election for acceptance of absentee ballot applications and casting of absentee ballots.  Minn. Stat. §203B.085

STATE PRIMARY ELECTION DAY

Cities without a Primary: Last day for candidates to withdraw. Candidates may withdraw until 5:00 p.m. by filing an Affidavit of Withdrawal - no later than 5:00 p.m. 2 days after filing closes.

Columbus Day Holiday:  Political subdivisions have the option of determining whether Columbus Day shall be a holiday on which no business shall be transacted.  Where it is determined that Columbus Day is not a holiday, public business may be conducted.

STATE GENERAL ELECTION DAY: Counties: First Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
