Information About:

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is an oil used as a lubricant and to provide the hydraulic pressure necessary for the smooth operation of a vehicle transmission.

It is illegal to put transmission fluid in the garbage or to pour it on the ground or down the drain (Minnesota Statutes ยง 115A.916).  Transmission fluid must be taken to a collection site that accepts it.

Do not mix used transmission fluid with antifreeze, water, gasoline, or other fluids.  Do not store used transmission fluid in a container previously used for antifreeze, bleach, paint, pesticides, or other chemicals.  Any residue left in the container may contaminate the transmission fluid.   A mixture of lubricants with nonlubricants cannot be recycled and must be disposed of as hazardous waste, which is more expensive than recycling.
