Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is specially formulated hydraulic fluid used in the brake hydraulic system of a motor vehicle.

Both new and used brake fluid pose a threat to humans, animals, surface and ground water, and air quality if disposed of improperly.

It is illegal to put brake fluid in the garbage or to pour brake fluid on the ground or down the drain (Minnesota Statutes § 115A.916). Brake fluid must be taken to a collection site that accepts it.

Do not mix used brake fluid with antifreeze, water, gasoline, or other fluids. Do not store used brake fluid in a container previously used for antifreeze, bleach, paint, pesticides, or other chemicals. Any residue left in the container may contaminate the brake fluid.
