Information About:

Textiles

Textile waste can be recycled and is usable.

Textile items, such as clothing and linens, are resold throughout the world.

Preparation:
  • Keep clean and dry.
  • Separate “rags” from usable clothing and household goods.
  • Remove any non-textile item, such as a handle.
  • Mark the box and/or bag containing textiles with a description of what is inside – clothing, household goods (sheets towels, etc.) or “rags.”
Do not recycle these pre- or post-consumer textiles:
  • Textiles contaminated with paint, oil, or other chemicals.
  • Textiles that have been wet and have mold or mildew on them.
Why recycle textiles?
  • The average American throws away 68 pounds of textiles every year.
  • The textile industry can recycle 93 percent of the textiles they process – without producing any new hazardous
  • Out of the 25 billion pounds of textiles generated in the US, only 15% gets donated or recycled.
  • About half is reused as clothing and the rest can be used for items such as wiping cloths, furniture stuffing, automotive fill and carpet padding.
