Information About:

Glass - Non-recyclable Curbside

Not all glass containers or glass items are recyclable.  Mixing non-recyclable glass with recyclable glass can ruin an entire batch of otherwise good glass.  It is very important that glass items that are non-recyclable be kept out of recyclable glass containers.

Ceramics, for example, have a higher melting temperature than glass.  When mixed with recyclable glass in the melting furnace, the ceramic pieces do not melt and become embedded in the new glass, resulting in defective new glass containers.

The manufacturing process to make cosmetic bottles and other glass products such as window glass, fiberglass, and glassware uses different processes and additives than container glass and are not recyclable with food and beverage bottles and jars.

Do not recycle these items:

  • Ceramic cups or mugs
  • Cookware
  • Cosmetic bottles
  • Crystal
  • Dishes
  • Drinking glasses
  • Light bulbs
  • Mirrors
  • Ovenware (including Pyrex glass)
  • Opaque white rum, black wine, and green beer bottles with ceramic tops
  • Pottery
  • Vases
  • Window glass
  • Glass containers that held hazardous products, such as hobby paints or nail polish

Be sure you know exactly what your recycling program accepts before saving materials for collection.  See our Residential Recycling Opportunities page for more information on your municipality.
