Auto scrap includes vehicles, motors, and other miscellaneous items from a vehicle.  Many parts are metal.  Metals are classified as either ferrous or non-ferrous. 
Ferrous metals are iron, steel, and tin. 
Non-ferrous metals are aluminum, brass, copper, gold, lead, magnesium, mercury, nickel, platinum, silver, stainless steel, and tin. 

• Recycling automobiles saves energy and natural resources, by recycling the fluids that are removed from the junked vehicles, by reusing salvageable automotive parts removed from scrap vehicles, and by reprocessing scrap metals.
• For every ton of steel recycled, 2500 pounds of iron ore, 1400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.

What happens to scrapped automobiles?
The proper disposal and recycling of automotive fluids, parts, and scrap metals has become an important part of the automotive industry.  First, all fluids and hazardous materials are removed from the vehicle and either recycled or disposed of properly.  Then, parts are tested to see if they work, and if they do, are dismantled and inventoried for resale.  Finally, any unusable parts and scrap metal are recycled.  Recycled steel is used to make appliances, automobiles, bicycles, rebar, steel siding, and toys and more.
