Corrugated boxes are strong boxes used to package and protect a variety of materials.  Corrugated cardboard is made with three layers of brown kraft paper glued together.  The center layer is fluted and gives the corrugated cardboard strength.

Preparation:
  • Keep clean and dry.
  • Remove any tape, rigid foam, wood or large staples.
  • Curbside collection: Flatten and cut to approximate size of 3’ x 3’.  Bundle or box them together.
  • Recycling drop-off center: Flatten only.
Do not recycle these kinds of corrugated cardboard:
  • Corrugated cardboard boxes coated for wet strength made for storage in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • Corrugated cardboard boxes contaminated with food, grease, or other chemicals.
  • Waxed corrugated cardboard boxes commonly used in grocery stores.
Why recycle corrugated cardboard?
  • Up to 65% less energy is required to make new paper from recycled paper than from virgin wood.
  • Every ton of recycled paper saves approximately 17 trees.

What is corrugated cardboard recycled into?
Corrugated cardboard is collected, baled, and taken to a paper mill where it is mixed with hot water and turned into pulp.  The pulp is screened for contaminants, cleaned, often de-inked and bleached, and then made into new paper products.  Corrugated cardboard can be recycled into new corrugated cardboard, boxboard (cereal, cake, chip, and cracker boxes), puzzles, games and items such as tablet backing.
