Information About:

Fertilizer

Fertilizers contain plant nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus (phosphates), and potassium (potash).  Blended fertilizers with formulation such as 10-10-10 or 24-3-3 indicate the percentages of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash in the fertilizer.  Fertilizers are available in solid or liquid form.

Since January 1, 2005, fertilizers containing phosphorus have been banned from use on residential lawns in Minnesota unless the soil is tested and found to be deficient in phosphorus or a new lawn is being established (Minnesota Statutes § 18C.60).  Phosphorus lawn fertilizers are lawn fertilizers that have a number other than a zero as the middle number in the formulation.  For options to manage phosphorus fertilizer, call Anoka County Recycling & Resource Solutions at 763-324-3400.

Only household fertilizers that contain a pesticide are hazardous.  Fertilizers known as “weed and feed” fertilizers contain weed or bug killers.  If a fertilizer contains a pesticide, manage and dispose of the product as a pesticide.  Do not put the product in the garbage or pour it down the drain.  Take it to the Anoka County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
