Handle fluorescent, HID, and neon lamps carefully.  Do not break or crush bulbs – you will be exposed to a small amount of mercury.

Recycle all of the following kinds of lamps, intact or broken:

• Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) of all shapes and sizes 
• Fluorescent bulbs of all shapes and sizes (tubes, circles, U-shapes, bug zapper lights, tanning lamps, and ultraviolet or black lights) 
• High intensity discharge (HID) lamps for outdoor lighting (metal halide, mercury vapor and high pressure sodium lamps) 
• Neon lights

Note that most locations accept only intact (unbroken) fluorescent and HID bulbs and CFLs.

If a fluorescent bulb breaks, do not put it in the garbage.  For cleanup information, call Anoka County Recycling & Resource Solutions at 763-324-3400, Mon – Fri, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or see Cleaning up spilled mercury in the home on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency website.  Place the broken bulb, including small broken pieces, in a sealed container such as a plastic bag, separate from any supplies used for cleanup.  Place the cleanup supplies in a separate sealed container such as a plastic bag.  Take the container holding the broken lamp and the separate container holding the cleanup supplies to the Anoka County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Fluorescent bulb recycling coupons for Xcel Energy residential electric customers:  To receive fluorescent bulb recycling coupons, visit Xcel Energy's website and select a link for coupons, or call 1-800-895-4999 and request Bulb Recycling Coupons.  Coupons are redeemable at participating hardware stores in Minnesota.  Each coupon is good for a discount to recycle one bulb.  Xcel Energy will redeem up to 10 coupons per household or small business per year.  Participants must be Xcel Energy electric customers.
