Information About:

Garbage Drop-off

Garbage
Residents in a municipality with a population of 1,000 or more must have garbage service or manage their waste in an environmentally sound manner. Burning or burying garbage on your property is illegal and harmful to people and the environment. Contact your municipality to see which garbage haulers to contact to start collection at your house.  See our Residential Recycling Opportunities page for more information on your municipality.  You may also haul garbage yourself to the sites listed below.

Resource Recovery
The Anoka County Integrated Waste Management system includes resource recovery.  Waste that cannot be recycled is made into fuel to generate electricity.  Ask your hauler where your waste goes.

The majority of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Anoka County is processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) at the Great River Energy Processing Plant rather than disposed of in landfills. RDF is burned at power plants to generate enough electricity to supply about 30,000 homes per day.

Landfills
There are no municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills currently operating in Anoka County.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is actively involved in regulating Minnesota's landfills. In addition to permitting landfills, MPCA has programs for cleaning up and closing Minnesota landfills. Visit their website for information about the Landfill Cleanup Program.
