Information About:

Phone Books

Phone books are made from newsprint.  State law prohibits putting telephone directories in your garbage (Minnesota Statutes ยง 115A.951).  Please recycle.

Preparation:
  • Keep clean and dry.
  • Place in your cart for recycling.
  • Do not place phone books in plastic bags.

Do not recycle these:
Phone books contaminated with food, grease, or other chemicals.

Why recycle phone books?
  • Phone books contain up to 40 percent recycled paper.
  • Every hour metropolitan area residents place over 42,000 pounds of recyclable mixed paper and mail in the garbage.

What are phone books recycled into?
Phone books are collected, baled and taken to a paper mill where they are mixed with hot water and turned into pulp.  The pulp is screened for contaminants, cleaned, often de-inked and bleached, and then made into new paper products.  Phone books are recycled into new phone books, hydro seed mulch, food boxes, egg cartons, game boards, cellulose insulation and many other products.
