Yard and Tree Waste

Mulching naturally fertilizes and strengthens the lawn to make it more resistant to disease. Simply mow and leave the clippings where they lay. No cost, no bagging, no hauling. Learn more by downloading our publication "Composting and Grasscycling".

State law prohibits putting yard waste in your garbage (Minnesota Statutes § 115A.931). “Yard waste” includes garden wastes, leaves, lawn cuttings, weeds, shrub and tree waste, and prunings.

In addition to curbside pickup of garbage and recyclables, your garbage hauler may offer curbside pickup of yard waste.

Anoka County has two compost sites available to its residents that accept yard waste:

You must show proof of residency in Anoka County to use these sites.

Anoka County residents may drop off yard and tree waste; yard waste is $4.00 for each load (up to 4 cubic yards). An additional 50¢ per cubic yard will be charged in excess of 4 yards and tree waste is charged by the cubic yard.

Both sites are managed by RRT Processing Solutions.

The sites accept leaves, grass clippings, weeds, garden wastes, soft-bodied non-woody plant prunings, sod (residential quantities), acorns, pine needles, brush, logs and stumps.

Leaves and grass must be debagged. Please unload your yard waste and take your bags or containers home.

Tree waste may be loose or bundled. The more compact you make your load of tree waste, the lower the fee. (See Tree Waste Alternatives below.)

When available, finished compost may be picked up on a first come, first served basis (non-commercial use only). Be sure to bring your own containers and shovel. For compost availability or other information call RRT Processing Solutions, which manages the compost sites, at 763-767-7964.

Tree Waste Alternatives

State law prohibits putting brush and tree waste in your garbage.  Anoka County compost sites accept tree waste for a fee, charged by the cubic yard. Your garbage hauler may separately collect brush and tree waste for a fee.  You may also use tree waste as firewood or chip it for mulch.

There are several drop-off sites that accept tree waste for a fee from Anoka County residents. To view detailed information on tree waste see the Brush/Tree Waste section in our Recycling Directory.

To find an on-site tree service, which could include trimming, removal, chipping and pickup, check your business services phone directory under “Tree Service” or “Ground Maintenance.”
