Crime Prevention - Neighborhood Crime Watch

Neighborhood Crime Watch Programs, in partnership with local law enforcement, play an integral part in crime detection and prevention. National statistics have indicated that when neighbors are committed to participating in neighborhood watch groups, the quality of life in their neighborhoods improved. “Opportunity” provides the impetus for crime to occur. If neighbors organize their efforts to be vigilant of each other's property, it will likely result in the reduction of criminal incidents.

Here is how you get started:

  • Talk with your neighbors to gauge the interest in starting a Neighborhood Crime Watch (NCW)
  • There is not a large time commitment in beginning or maintaining a NCW group; however, you must be willing to hold two meetings a year with your neighbors. One with a Sheriff’s Office member present and the other on National Night Out.
  • Decide where you would like to host your first meeting. Some residents have it in their garage and others host it at a public building such as city hall, libraries or a community center.
  • When you are ready to schedule a meeting, contact Laura Landes at 763-767-4664. A 2 to 3 week notice is necessary.

At the first meeting, we will cover how to protect your home, reporting suspicious vehicles and people, calling 911, and concerns specific to your neighborhood.
