The Criminal Investigative Division provides investigative services and crime scene processing to all Anoka County police agencies. The division is responsible for all felony-level investigations of crimes occurring in Sheriff's Office patrol areas and felony cases not assumed by local police departments. The division specializes in investigations of:
Child abuse
Child pornography
Sexual assaults
Hazardous wastes disposal
Homicides
The division also has investigators trained in:
Fraud prevention - working in the area of welfare fraud
Computer and video forensics
Polygraph
The division also provides arson investigations and maintains the countywide register for predatory offenders.
Crime Lab
The Criminal Investigative Division (CID) houses Anoka County's only crime lab. The unit serves a dual purpose: 1) to process crime scenes in the field, and 2) to perform selected laboratory disciplines. Crime scene processing services are made available 24 hours a day.
Functions of the Crime Lab include:
Fingerprint development, enhancement, photography, comparison and identification
Drug chemistry to include analysis of street drugs and confimatory testing
Clandestine methamphetamine lab processing
Crime scene processing to include photography, evidence collection, and scene mapping
Blood stain pattern analysis and enhancement
Shooting scene reconstruction
Laboratory functions are included in the Tri County Regional Forensic Laboratory which also involves the counties of Sherburne and Wright.
The Crime Lab provides internships for Hamline University students under the Hamline Collaborative Internship Program.
Narcotics and Violent Crime Task Force
The Sheriff's Office coordinates the operations of the Anoka-Hennepin Narcotics and Violent Crimes Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of officers from the Sheriff's Office and the Anoka, Blaine, Brooklyn Park, Champlin, Fridley, Coon Rapids, Columbia Heights,and Maple Grove police departments.
Crime Victims Assistance Program
The Criminal Investigative Division has a Victims Services Coordinator. This position is responsible for keeping victims informed of the status of their case. The specialist also provides information on resources available to assist victims. See Help for victims of crime on this Web site.
