Help for Victims of Crime

Victim/Witness Rights

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office works to help citizens understand the criminal justice process. If you have been the victim of or witness to a crime, these are your rights:

  • To apply for reparations to cover losses resulting from violent crime, call
    • Minnesota Crime Victims Reparations Board at 651-201-7300 or 1-888-622-8799; tdd 651-205-4827
    • Anoka County Sheriff's Office Victim Services Coordinator at 763-323-5128
*Reparations do NOT cover property losses.
  • To request that the law enforcement agency withhold public access to data revealing your identity. The agency will decide if this is possible.
  • If the offender is charged, to be informed of and participate in the prosecution process, including the right to request restitution.
  • If you feel any of your rights have been violated call the MN Office of Justice Program's Crime Victim Justice Unit at 651-201-7310.

Domestic Assault Victims

If you have been a victim of domestic assault, these are your rights:

  • To ask the city or county attorney to file a criminal complaint
  • To go to court and file a petition requesting an order for protection against domestic abuse
  • The order could include the following:
    • Restraining the abuser from further acts of abuse
    • Directing the abuser to leave your household
    • Preventing the abuser from entering your home, school, business, or place of employment
    • Awarding you or the other parent custody of or visitation with your minor children
    • Directing the abuser to pay support to you and the minor children if the abuser has a court order to do so.
