Information About:

Mail
See locations for this item (below)

Mail is often third class unsolicited mail addressed to “occupant” or “resident”.  It is a combination of mail containing advertisements, credit card offers, catalogs, and other solicitations.  The type of paper mail is printed on is a high-quality paper for recycling.

Preparation:
  • Keep clean and dry.
  • You do not need to remove envelope window film.
  • Place mail in your curbside cart for recycling.
  • Do not place mail in plastic bags.
Do not recycle these items in mail:
  • Mail contaminated with food, grease, or paint
  • CDs used to promote products or services
  • Metal or plastic shipping boxes
  • Plastic film used to keep paper dry
  • Foil packaging
  • Credit cards
Hints to reduce mail
  • Use pre-stamped envelopes to mail back the information sent to you with a note to take you off their mailing lists.
  • When you order a product from a catalog or online ask that they not rent, sell or trade your information to another company.
  • Contact the Direct Marketing Association "Mail Preference Service", to reduce unwanted mail.
Why recycle mail?
  • An average American household receives over 677 pieces of unsolicited promotions, sales pitches and donation requests each year.
  • Every hour metropolitan area residents place over 42,000 pounds of recyclable paper in the garbage.
  • A piece of paper can be recycled 7 – 15 times before the fibers get too short for making new paper.

What is mail recycled into?
Mail is collected, baled and taken to a paper mill where it is mixed with hot water and turned into pulp.  The pulp is screened for contaminants, cleaned, often de-inked and bleached, and then made into new paper products.  Mail can be used to make new cereal boxes, facial and toilet paper, greeting cards, wrapping and writing paper.
