Containers and packaging not listed above or those that have held chemicals cannot be recycled as they contaminate the “new” batch of plastic and make it unusable.

Why recycle plastic containers?
  • Recycling 1 ton of plastic saves 16.3 barrels (685 gallons) of oil.
  • Half of all polyester carpet manufactured in the United States is made from recycled PETE plastic bottles.

What are plastic containers made into?
Plastic is collected, baled, chopped or shredded, cleaned, melted, palletized and used to manufacture new products.  PETE #1 is recycled into carpet, clothing, strapping, tennis balls and other bottles.  HDPE #2 is recycled into new containers, drainage pipe, film, pallets and plastic lumber for picnic tables and decks.  PVC #3 is recycled into fencing, drainage pipe, traffic cones, and automotive floor mats.  LDPE #4 is recycled into plastic lumber, garbage can liners, trash cans and other film.  PP #5 is recycled into pallets, DVD cases, brushes and plastic lumber.  PS #6 is recycled into rigid foam insulation, rigid foam packaging and cassette tapes.  Other #7 is a combination of plastics, some are compostable in an organics recycling program and the non-compostable can be recycled into plastic lumber.
